Rolls-Royce has unveiled its vision of the land-based control centres to remotely monitor and control the unmanned ships of the future.In a six minute film, Rolls-Royce presents a vision of the future in which a small crew of 7 to 14 people monitor and control the operation of a fleet of vessels across the world. The crew uses interactive smart screens, voice recognition systems, holograms and surveillance drones to monitor what is happening both on board and around the ship.

Israel based company Elbit Systems introduces Seagull, a new multi-mission unmanned surface vehicle system for maritime warfare missions with the aim to change the dynamic of anti-submarine operations through its detection capabilities.

The industry conversation on the topic of unmanned ships has entered turbulent waters. Its proponents say they can deliver the technology – though the initial project groups are only now investigating the subject in any depth – but doubts have been expressed about the regulatory framework that would permit their use.

Exercise Highcrest 2015 has recently conducted in Singapore with the use of an unmanned surface vessel.

Unmanned vessels are already a reality in todays shipping industry, and will play a larger role in future, delegates to The Nautical Institutes latest seminar were told.
