Major challenges mixed with significant developments made 2017 an interesting year for the maritime industry. The agenda of events included from rise of technology trends and vessel automation, to cyber security issues and piracy revival.

This joint project will use Rolls-Royce's IAS, which can be an underlying technology, and the IAS will be installed on a ferry in service. The technology will be used in new sensors for nautical instruments, like ship radar.

The Shipowners' Club released a report, in which they outline the developments made in autonomous vessels and the implications that may occur in the light of a P&I perspective. It also clarifies that amendments will need to be made to the existing regulatory framework to ensure it remains relevant to unmanned vessels and autonomous vessels.

​Maritime regulation should be made more flexible if it is to support the development of autonomous ships, according to a new report by Danish Maritime Authority. The report identifies where changes in maritime regulation are needed and will be used as a platform for the future effort of DMA to develop regulation and make it digitalisation-ready.

The autonomous vessel technology has seen an advance lately, due to increased investment. In a recent article, the Shipowners' Club makes an attempt to outline the actions that have been made in regard to autonomous vessels and those that are planned to happen.

In its latest issue of “Phish & Ships”, Be Cyber Aware at sea, touches upon the issue of cyber security. It presents thoughts of of industry leaders, as well as advice and new guidance on how to deal with maritime cyber risks.

BMT aims to address the challenge of how traditional manned vessels can co-exist with autonomous systems in shared water space. Deimos Space UK will investigate how the exploitation of existing and future satellite capabilities can contribute to this objective.

The new area is open to both Norwegian and international organisations, in order to support the growth in development of new solutions for autonomous maritime operations. The test-bed is the third of its kind in the country and only the fourth such approved area in the world.

ABS Executive Vice President, Dr. Kirsi Tikka, discussed interim benefits on the shipping industry’s journey to autonomous, noting that fast-paced advances in technology will be a gradual process of evolution for the sector, both at sea and ashore.

Autonomous Shipping is a Joint Industry Project bringing together a Dutch consortium of maritime businesses, knowledge & educational institutions, service providers, and governments in a two-year applied research programme, that will look at ways to deploy existing technical solutions in autonomous shipping applications.
