For autonomous shipping to gain regulatory and societal acceptance, this technology must be at least as safe as traditional ships, said the UK P&I Club in a new paper. A successful approach to change would be to develop regulations in tandem with technological advancements, always maintaining the focus on safety.
The IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) held its 101st session from June 5 to 14, 2019. After its conclusion, the meeting decided on many important issues during this session. Among others, these include fuel quality and safety, maritime autonomous surface ships, and the approval and adoption of various instruments.
The 100th session of IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 100) concluded on 7 December, approving the framework and methodology for the regulatory scoping exercise on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), following testing of the methodology by a correspondence group.
On the occasion of the opening of MSC 100, the IMO issued a short film reviewing its basic activities in the area of shipping safety. IMO’s MSC 100 started for its milestone 100th session on 3 December, with a busy agenda encompassing maritime autonomous surface ships, fatigue guidance for seafarers, polar shipping, goal-based standards and other agenda items.
The 99th session of IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee concluded on 25 May marking new steps and reviewing older developments towards a safer shipping industry. Autonomous vessels, piracy and armed robbery against ships, the Arctic shipping safety, as well as the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, were key topics on the agenda.
The 99th session of IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee concluded on 25 May, endorsing a framework for a regulatory scoping exercise, as work in progress, including preliminary definitions of autonomous ships and degrees of autonomy, as well as a methodology for conducting the exercise and a plan of work.
The 99th session of IMO’s MSC has begun with discussions on how to proceed with a regulatory scoping exercise on autonomous vessels. MSC 99 is expected to touch on an extensive range of issues, including the human element, safety, security and protection of the marine environment, for different levels of autonomy.
MSC 99 will examine how the safe, secure and environmentally sound operation of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships may be introduced in IMO instruments. Previous Committee had recognized that IMO should take a proactive and leading role on this issue, given the rapid developments.
