Russian developers have launched the project of a unique technological platform that will allow testing of unmanned surface vessels navigation in virtual environment. The project will be presented by the working group MariNet of the National Technological Initiative.

The EU STM Validation, which won the first 2017 SMART4SEA Innovation Award last January, has installed its first Sea Traffic Management compatible bridge systems in “Stena Germanica” and two rescue units from Swedish Sea Rescue Society.

The One Sea – Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem announced the opening of the Jaakonmeri autonomous maritime test area, the first to be globally open to anyone wishing to test autonomous maritime traffic, vessels, or technologies related to it. 

The European project EfficienSea2 is testing a new Smart Buoy solution, aiming to allow ships to have improved navigational services and to receive data in support of vessel operations, when reaching ports. The buoy will allow port authorities and ships to collect and share information in a completely autonomous system.

Ahead of the automation that takes place within the shipping industry, Finnish port equipment manufacturer Kalmar stresses that “a zero accident port is definitely a mission possible”, suggesting that machines detect their surroundings and notice things that human eyes and ears might not, thus helping humans to prevent accidents. 

BOURBON has entered MoU with Automated Ships Ltd to support the building of the world’s first autonomous, fully-automated and cost-efficient prototype vessel for offshore operations, in collaboration with the project’s primary technology partner, KONGSBERG.

China Classification Society and HNA Technology Logistics Group have launched an unmanned cargo ship development alliance in China. The collaboration aims to establish technology and regulatory standards and assess of the environmental impacts and the commercialization of unmanned vessels.

MacGregor and ESL Shipping Oy have agreed to jointly develop and test an autonomous discharging feature on MacGregor bulk handling cranes, designed to offer safety and efficiency advances. The cranes will be fitted on board ESL Shipping's two new liquefied natural gas-powered handysize bulk carriers.
