Maritime welfare charities across the UK are taking part in a pilot project to provide the crews of visiting vessels with access to high-speed internet services. The pilot project is developed by ITF Seafarers' Trust and managed by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB).

The IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) held its 101st session from June 5 to 14, 2019. After its conclusion, the meeting decided on many important issues during this session. Among others, these include fuel quality and safety, maritime autonomous surface ships, and the approval and adoption of various instruments.

EPIRB or Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon is a safety device carried by a vessel to alert search and rescue services, allowing them to quickly locate you in the event of an emergency. When activated it transmits a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency which is monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.

Volvo Trucks' autonomous vehicle Vera will become part of a solution to transport goods from DFDS' logistics center to an APM terminal in the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 40 km/hr (25 miles/hr). Last year, Volvo Trucks launched its first electric, autonomous solution, aimed to operate on repetitive assignments in logistics centers, factories and ports.

 MacGregor and Kongsberg Maritime signed an agreement according to which the former will deliver automated mooring system for the world's first autonomous container ship, Yara Birkeland. Thus, automation will enable mooring operations to be conducted with no need of human intervention and also will support effective operation of the fully electric, zero emission vessel. 

Following the 5G trials that were conducted in Port of Hamburg, the Port of Hamburg Authority along with Deutsche Telekom and Nokia have tested new features of the 5G standard with different applications. Telekom commented that Under 5G, there will no longer be "one size fits all network" but multiple virtual networks running simultaneously on the same common infrastructure.

Oceaneering International announced that it has secured a contract to carry out the first-ever deepwater Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) survey in Mexican waters. BHP will conduct the geophysical survey. BHP will carry out the geophysical survey at its Trion development, and currently, work is underway and will continue for around 45 days.
