The 2018 acreage release includes 21 areas located across six sedimentary basins in Commonwealth waters offshore of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and the Ashmore and Cartier Islands. 16 areas are available for work program bidding and five areas for cash bidding. The areas are located in water depths of 15 to 4,534 metres, vary in size from 80 km² to 12,128 km² and also vary in level of existing geological knowledge.

AMSA, in partnership with the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation and Mackay Regional Council, has initiated a pilot program at the Port of Hay Point to investigate the feasibility of recycling garbage from international ships.

Australia will allocate A$500 million ($379.10 million), in an attempt to protect the Great Barrier Reef. Specifically, the funding will aim to improve the water quality and safeguard the Coral Reef from starfish attacks. Part of the funding will make sure that sediment, nitrogen and pesticide won't end up in the coral reef, damaging its ecosystem.

A 55-year-old woman, member of the Maritime Union of Australia, remains in a critical condition in hospital after a workplace collision between two port shuttle carriers at Hutchison Ports Australia, at Port Botany. The accident happened on Thursday, 19 of April. The woman sustained a broken leg, broken arm and a closed head injury.

A woman fell overboard the P&O cruise ship "Pacific Dawn", on April 4, while the ship was sailing 300 kilometres west off New Caledonia. A search and rescue mission was immediately launched, but because of the bad weather, it has now been called off. The woman fell overboard the ship, while it was in the Coral Sea, heading to Brisbane on the return.
