The West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) is developing its image as the gateway to Eastern Nigeria and a strong alternative to ports in Largos, followed by the beginning of Phase 2 upgrade. According to forecasts, the port’s volume will grow, followed by the increasing number of shipping lines, importers and exporters develop confidence in WACT’s ability to handle their cargo.
The new Vado Gateway terminal, located in Vado Ligure, Italy, marked the start of operations on 11 February 2020, when the container ship Maersk Kota became the first ship to have called at the new deep-sea container terminal, APM Terminals informed.
During 2019, the Sogester Container Terminal, located in the Port of Luanda, Angola, invested about $25 million in terminal handling equipment, IT system upgrades and facilities. In fact, January 2020 saw the arrival of an LH800 mobile harbour crane, with a 20-row outreach.
APM Terminals Poti, in west coast of Georgia, revealed plans for the creation of a deep-water port to the country. The plans require an investment of over 250 million USD of private capital for phase 1 and a substantial amount for phase 2 in an extensive development of the port infrastructure.
APM Terminals announced that its Mumbai terminal handled more than 2 million TEUs throughput for the second consecutive year in 2019. Commissioned in 2006, the terminal remains the only Indian container terminal to have achieved this record in a calendar year.
The Port of Salalah, Oman’s major regional gateway port, hit an all-time record container volume of 4-million TEUs in December 2019, marking also a 19% year-on-year volume growth, according to data provided by APM Terminals.
APM Terminals Yucatán, in the Port of Progreso, Mexico acquired a new mobile harbour crane, in a USD 4 million investment, which will boost the terminal’s operational efficiency by 40% when it is fully implemented.
APM Terminals Moín welcomed the MSC Sara Elena, the largest container ship to ever berth in Costa Rica, measuring 300m long with a capacity of 8,000 TEUs, in November. The vessel was in port for just under nine hours, including the obligatory first call celebrations. Exports of key Costa Rican exports, such as pineapples and bananas, were loaded onto the Sara Elena which sailed for Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
APT Terminals presented its brand new customer alert system, as from the 1st of December is going to replace the previous old email subscription one. Through these additional improvements and with just a subscribe, customers will be able to receive terminal alerts via SMS (Text) or email.
Port of Gothenburg announced its plans on doubling the volume of containers transported by rail to and from Gothenburg by 2022 aiming to emissions’ reduction of up to 98%. APM Gothenburg is connected to more than 300 inland destinations in Sweden via rail, with more than 60 rail shuttles per week.
