US Department of Energy announces collaboration for the promotion of hydrogen

The US Department of Energy Fuel Cell Technologies Office Director Sunita Satyapal announced a collaboration with the new Center for Hydrogen Safety, launched by AIChE. Namely, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and AIChE will cooperate to enable information sharing on hydrogen safety and best practices among national and international stakeholders with an interest in hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

Norwegian partnership tests fuel cells for the first conversion of hydrogen hybrid ferry

ABB, SINTEF and Fiskerstrand are test fuel cells for the world’s first conversion of a hydrogen hybrid ferry. The tests aim to provide answers needed for Norwegian shipyard Fiskerstrand to convert an existing ferry to run on a combination of batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. ABB and the SINTEF Ocean laboratory will assess how fuel cells and batteries can function together for short-distance ferry operations.

Fuel cell centre to be built in Denmark

Ballard Power Systems Europe will establish a Marine Center of Excellence (Marine CoE) focused on fuel cell marine applications at the company's engineering, manufacturing and service facility in Hobro, Denmark. The Marine CoE will design and manufacture heavy duty fuel cell modules to address zero-emission powertrain requirements for the shipping industry.

The challenges surrounding the 2020 compliant fuels

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Bill Stamatopoulos, VeriFuel’s Business Development Manager for South Europe, discussed the possible challenges that the shipping industry will face regarding the 2020 compliant fuels regulation. Mr. Stamatopoulos explained that the supply chain must cooperate and improve transparency in the bunker sector when the 2020 sulphur cap regulation comes into force.
