The third day of Sea Asia 2019 ended with industry leaders from across the supply chain discussing what the change from fossil fuels means for the maritime industry. Following day two, participants unanimously agreed that every government, industry, company and individual has to take action.

Norway-based Höegh Autoliners reiterated its firm position against scrubbers, as an option for compliance with the IMO's 2020 sulphur cap. In a recent interview, the company's CEO, Ivar Myklebust, said it will achieve compliance by using Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil or Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil. 

Japanese shipping entity Ocean Network Express (ONE) has decided to install scrubbers on up to 10 vessels in early 2020, in a bid to comply with 2020 sulphur cap, the company's CEO was quoted as saying during an event in Singapore this week.

Shell Marine launched a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil specifically for use with engines running on 0.5% sulphur content very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) as IMO's 2020 sulphur regulation is approaching. The 'Shell Alexia 40' will be available for use in Singapore from June 1, 2019.

The 2020 sulphur cap, a MARPOL Annex VI requirement, enters into force on 1 January 2020, less than nine months away. In this regard, Sammy Smallbone, Lawyer at Gard AS provided recommendations for managing the transition where the strategy is to use conventional compliant fuel.

The US Department of Energy Fuel Cell Technologies Office Director Sunita Satyapal announced a collaboration with the new Center for Hydrogen Safety, launched by AIChE. Namely, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and AIChE will cooperate to enable information sharing on hydrogen safety and best practices among national and international stakeholders with an interest in hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

ABB, SINTEF and Fiskerstrand are test fuel cells for the world’s first conversion of a hydrogen hybrid ferry. The tests aim to provide answers needed for Norwegian shipyard Fiskerstrand to convert an existing ferry to run on a combination of batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. ABB and the SINTEF Ocean laboratory will assess how fuel cells and batteries can function together for short-distance ferry operations.

Ballard Power Systems Europe A/S, a subsidiary of Canadian fuel cell solutions provider Ballard Power Systems, announced establishment of a Marine Center of Excellence, dedicated to fuel cell marine applications at the company’s engineering, manufacturing and service facility in Hobro, Denmark.

HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission) published its "Alternative fuels for shipping in the Baltic Sea region" report, aiming to provide an overview of the recent developments on alternative fuels in the Baltic Sea, with the focus on LNG.

Ballard Power Systems Europe will establish a Marine Center of Excellence (Marine CoE) focused on fuel cell marine applications at the company's engineering, manufacturing and service facility in Hobro, Denmark. The Marine CoE will design and manufacture heavy duty fuel cell modules to address zero-emission powertrain requirements for the shipping industry.
