The government of India is examining the potential to allow use of methanol as a marine fuel, which would be a cheaper, cleaner and forex-saving solution compared to diesel, according to Indian Union minister, Nitin Gadkari.

The European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Greece, Ireland, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and the United Kingdom, requesting them to notify their national policy framework under EU rules on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure.

The bunkering vessel ENGIE Zeebrugge performed in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, its first deliveries of LNG as a marine fuel to two new gas-propelled pure car and truck carriers of UECC. The LNG bunkering operations were conducted at the same time that the cargo operations for the carriers were taking place.

Heineken, Nedcargo and GoodFuels announced the launch of a joint pilot initiative, aiming to demonstrate the advantages of operating inland transport barges, using sustainable drop-in marine fuel. Under the project, the 104 TEU inland barge ‘For Ever’ will transport Heineken beer from Zoeterwoude to Rotterdam, fueled with 30% biofuel.

Shell Marine has unveiled next generation of its trunk piston oils for the medium-speed engine market, in order to help operators to meet compliance with environmental regulations. Exhaustive in-engine trials confirm them as oils that avoid sludge formation, improve piston and crankcase cleanliness, and thus block deposit formation.

The European Commission has asked Cyprus, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia to fully transpose EU rules on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure (Directive 2014/94/EU). The main purpose of the Directive is to establish a common framework for the large-scale roll-out of alternative fuels infrastructure in Europe.
