The future of marine fuels, in the wake of the Global 2020 Sulphur limit and other tightening regulations around air pollution and emissions from shipping, will be discussed at this year's Europort Conference in November.

Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, BHP and GoodFuels Marine, the inaugural biofuel roundtable, held in Singapore on September 21, drove discussions on the use of biofuels as a sustainable alternative fuel for the future of shipping.

LPGreen, a joint development project between four leaders in the maritime industry, has been working on a concept design for an LPG carrier capable of operating on LPG fuel. Almost a year into the project, the partners agree the results to date have been good.

The UK Government announced that it has committed to spending millions on funding innovative technologies and fuels to reduce maritime emissions, and help create a zero-emissions sector. UK has been working closely with industry to develop international regulations to support LNG and other alternative fuels.

Germany's Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure announced that it is now promoting the upgrading and conversion of seagoing vessels to LNG as a marine fuel. The aim of the new funding program is to promote the use of LNG in German shipping. 

MS innogy, the first ship in Germany to be powered by an environmentally friendly methanol fuel cell, was christened and put into operation as a regular passenger vessel, in a formal ceremony, on Essen’s Lake Baldeney.

Flogas Britain and Associated British Ports have joined forces, to carry out the first ever LNG bunkering in the UK. The 110-metre carrier "Ireland", operated by Norwegian KGJ Cement, was refuelled with LNG at the Port of Immingham, on August 23.

The government of India is examining the potential to allow use of methanol as a marine fuel, which would be a cheaper, cleaner and forex-saving solution compared to diesel, according to Indian Union minister, Nitin Gadkari.
