Port of Rotterdam expressed its support to the European Commission's efforts to promote the use of sustainable fuels in the shipping industry, as it will consequently accelerate its own eco-friendly initiative.

Imabari Shipbuilding along with MAN Energy Solutions, Mitsui E&S Machinery, ClassNK, ITOCHU ENEX and ITOCHU Corporation shake their hands and signed an agreement in order to jointly develop vessels equipped with ammonia-fueled engine and achieve net zero emissions. 

Stena Bulk successfully completed marine biofuel trials on the 49646 deadweight tonne MR tanker, "Stena Immortal". Specifically, the MR tanker received the first delivery of Bio Fuel Oil in its recent call at the Port of Rotterdam, supplied by GoodFuels.

During the 2020 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Antonis Trakakis, Technical Manager, Arista Shipping, said in his presentation that developments in LNG bunkering infrastructure allow for global trade with medium sized tanks of moderate cost, adding that the technological advances will soon minimize the methane slip.

A group of companies has come together to develop a better understanding of the practical realities involved in using ammonia as a fuel for ships.

Exactly five years have passed, since the methanol fuelled ferry "Stena Germanica" first set sail. In fact, the vessel was a joint venture effort among Methanex Corporation, Stena Line, and Wärtsilä as it was the world's first ferry using methanol as a marine fuel.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland along with several collaborators are exploring how fuel oils made from biomass and waste plastics can be suitable for power plants and ship diesel engines. Through their research, partners aim to determine the most ecologically and economically sustainable ways for fossil fuels' replacement.

During the 2020 SAFETY4SEA Limassol Forum, Dr. John Kokarakis, Vice President Technology & Business Development, Bureau Veritas, discussed ammonia as a potential solution for carbon-free shipping. During his presentation, Dr. Kokarakis presented the advantages of ammonia on the one hand, and the challenges on the other, adding that difficulties around ammonia can be controlled by technical and regulatory options.

To capture the opportunities offered by low-carbon alternatives, five Singapore and two Japanese companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study how hydrogen as a low-carbon alternative can contribute to a clean and sustainable energy future for Singapore.
