UAE-based bunker supplier GP Global informed that it will be preparing to start providing 0.5% sulphur fuel starting from the beginning of April ahead of the IMO 2020 sulphur cap. The fuel will be available in major ports and at delivery points of Rotterdam/ARA, Fujairah and Singapore. By the fourth quarter of 2019, the company plans to extend the LSFO availability to smaller ports as well.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that the share of high sulphur residual fuel oil consumed as bunker in the US will fall from 58% in 2019 to 3% in 2020, and then rebounds to 24% in 2022. The Administration highlights that the regulations will affect petroleum supply, demand, and trade flows on a more long-term basis.

Grupa LOTOS and PGNiG carried out two commercial bunkers of LNG, between 13 and 18 March 2019, at the at sea ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia in Poland. These are the first operations that took place in Polish ports. Namely, on March 13, 14 tonnes of LNG were injected into the 'Fure Valo's' tanks, which is owned by Gothia Tankers. The company aims to develop the LNG-fueled fleet, and aspires to have six such vessels by the end of the year. The second bunkering took place on March 18, where 18 tonnes of LNG were transported from a tanker to the tanks of the 'Ireland' ship.

Port of Antwerp is starting an ambitious new project, as it will gather various players in the port area to promote the sustainable production of methanol. The Port considers methanol an important raw material, and for this reason it took the next step in the transition to alternative energy sources and a carbon-neutral port.

IKEA Transport & Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam announced the successful refuelling of the CMA CGM White Shark with sustainable marine bio-fuel oil. On March 23, CMA CGM announced that the refuelling trial was successful.

A consortium of Dutch companies, universities and knowledge institutions have teamed up on the 'Gigawatt Electrolysis Factory' project, recently kicked-off at the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, aiming to investigate what it takes to build a gigawatt-sized electrolysis plant in the Netherlands around 2025-2030. 

Antwerp is the fifth-largest bunkering port in the world. For this reason it aims to become a Multi-Fuel Port by 2025, meaning a port where in addition to conventional fuels, alternative, more sustainable fuels can also be made available. In the short term the Port has decided to include methanol, hydrogen gas and electrical energy in the bunkering market.

GE’s Power Conversion business and fuel cell manufacturer Nedstack announced collaboration on developing hydrogen fuel cell systems for powering zero-emission cruise vessels. So far, the companies have designed the concept for a two megawatt hydrogen fuel cell power plant on an expedition vessel.

Dutch company Reinplus Fiwado Bunker, a subsidiary of  fuel supplier VARO Energy, and sustainable fuel company GoodFuels have extended their partnership to improve availability of bio fuel oil (BFO) to deep sea vessels leaving from Rotterdam, the companies announced.
