Watch: MOL unveils AI vessel recognition system

Japanese MOL and SenseTime Japan Ltd. developed a new vessel image recognition and recording system, which deploys artificial intelligence to recognize surrounding vessels. The video shows the system’s installation for demonstration testing aboard the cruise ship “Nippon Maru” operated by MOPAS.

Japanese shipping company MOL announced its intention to install a navigation system using augmented reality (AR) technology jointly developed by Furuno Electric and MOL Techno-Trade, on 21 MOL-operated very large crude oil carriers (VLCCs).

At the end of 2017, Strava, a mobile appthat tracks athletic activity, released a global heatmap showing the “anonymised” movement patterns of its users who did not keep their data private. Among these users are seafarers and people on offshore platforms as well.
