EIA expects a 2.2% decline in CO2 emissions for 2019, in comparison to a 2.7% increase in U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2018; The decrease will be the result of fewer emissions from coal consumption.

UK's Portsmouth International Port has proposed a series of major projects, including shore power, wind turbines and solar panels, as part of its Air Quality Strategy to reduce emissions and become the UK’s first zero emission port.

The British Port of Southampton announced completion of a project that aimed to lengthen the tracks at Solent Rail Terminal and it now aims to reduce lorry movements in the city by 180,000 each year. Solent Stevedores and ABP Southampton have partnered on this scheme.

The US Port of Oakland has approved an air quality plan intended to drastically cut diesel and greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the port’s maritime operations. The plan, called the Seaport Air Quality 2020 and Beyond Plan, envisions a zero-emissions operation in the future.

Danish ferry operator DFDS is investing in the start-up company MASH Energy ApS that produces biofuel from agricultural waste, in order to develop a commercially viable alternative to fossil fuels, including testing on a DFDS ferry.

Six petrochemical storage tanks caught fire at the International Terminal Co. storage farm at Houston's sprawling Deer Park refining complex, on March 17. The fire spread quickly, and managed to affect a total of seven filled. These tanks include gasoline, xylene, naphtha and lubricant base oil. All employees are accounted for, and no injuries have been reported.

Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District and its partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect endangered whales announced results from the 2018 program and recognized the 12 shipping companies that participated, reducing speeds to 10 knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Santa Barbara Channel region.
