ABS published its cyber security solution to help with regulated maritime facilities in complying with USCG guidance. The company’s services provide a solution for port and terminal facility operators that are responsible for maintaining USCG regulated Facility Security Plans (FSPs).
ABS launches the FCI Cyber Risk Model that enables the maritime cyber security risk to be more accurately measured. This methodology was developed by ABS Advanced Solutions. With the FCI Risk Model, one can measure and quantify risks based on critical functions, interconnections and identities that access those critical functions through digital connections.

The ABS FCI Cyber Risk model was developed after a two-year research contract between ABS and the Maritime Security Center. It was launched in June 2018, and quantifies cyber security risk, giving owners and operators a strategy to limit cyber risk onboard a vessel.
Mr Rick Scott, Senior Technical Advisor, ABS, shares latest developments on cyber security, explaining what initiatives ABS has taken to raise awareness, for which the classification society has been shortlisted alongside other distinguished nominees. Namely, ABS conducted a two-year research which resulted in a new model to assess cyber risk. As an industry, the ability to measure cyber risk will become a core foundation for operational efficiency and safety, he concludes.
ABS awarded a CS-Ready Notation to a Sembcorp Marine jack-up drilling rig built to its proprietary Pacific Class 400 design. The CS-Ready Notation combines new features as it is the first-of-its-kind issued to an offshore facility. It requires that functions and connections are specifically characterized so the owner can control access to connections and systems.
South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest shipbuilding company, announced that it has received a cyber security certificate from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for one of its very large crude carriers (VLCCs). This was the first time in the world that the company received the Cyber Security Ready (CSR) for a VLCC.
During Posidonia 2018, SAFETY4SEA team met with Mr. Pantelis Skinitis, Business Development at ABS, to discuss about industry’s response to cyber risks. Mr. Skinitis noted that shipping industry needs specific guidance on how to implement any cyber security regulatory framework and advised to follow the example from other industries;
