Cases of crew abandonment remain a very serious problem for seafarers worldwide, despite the fact that the world is now more aware of the problem. To depict the issue, Periplous created a map depicting every case of crew abandoment around the world.

24 seafarers abandoned since July, after their ships were detained in Ravenna Port in Italy for alleged non-payment of bunker supplies, have been repatriated.

Human Rights at Sea recently announced that is collaborating with the Indian Ministry of Shipping and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India to improve human rights outcomes for Indian seafarers around the global.

In light of the growing number of abandoned crew onboard ships in the Arab region,without pay, food or water, ITF Arab World and Iran Network join forces to help and get them home.

Shipowners can improve communication, to prevent misinformation and minimize the feeling of abandonment for seafarers, said Ms. Caitlin Vaughan, Project Manager at ISWAN during a webinar last week.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) reported that 15 seafarers remain stranded onboard the Spanish-flagged ship "MV Celanova" which does not have a rudder, and lacks electricity, lights, wi-fi, refrigeration, GPS, security or safety lights.

Three Greek crew members arrived in Greece after remaining stranded onboard two bulk carriers, MV Ptolemeos and MV Arrybas, at anchor in the Port of Djibouti.

The ITF sheds light on two more crew abandonment incidents, where 25 seafarers remain stranded onboard two bulk carriers at anchor in the Port of Djibouti. The stranded seafarers are onboard the Liberia-flagged MV Ptolemeos and MV Arrybas.  

A workshop organized by key UN and European instruments took place in Lisbon Portugal, on 18-20 February, aimed to help all stakeholders, particularly, developing countries, build the capacity they need to ratify and implement the MLC.

Five fishermen were adrift in the Indian Ocean following their vessel's engine failure and were then saved by the maritime charity Stella Maris (Apostleship of the Sea), which towed the ship and brought the fishermen back to shore.
