The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) and IMO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for future cooperation in the areas of climate and energy, data collaboration and risk and resilience of ship-to-shore operations.

According to International Council on Clean Transportation, the initial strategy of IMO to cut GHG emissions by only 50% by 2050 wasn’t compatible with the Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming.

Major organizations welcome the revised 2023 GHG Strategy which aims to reach net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, that was agreed during MEPC 80.

The 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships was revised during the meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), July 3–7 2023. Many NGOs express dislike over the revised strategy as they claim that the IMO has not taken enough measures to reduce shipping's emissions. 

The 2023 IMO GHG strategy sends an unequivocal signal to investors that ships being ordered today, and many already built, have to be capable of running on zero emission fuels, UMAS notes following MEPC80 decisions. 

Last week, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed on a revised strategy which includes an ambition to reach net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping close to 2050. However, as ICS notes, a global levy on ship’s GHG emissions must now be adopted rapidly if the ambitious goals agreed are to remain plausible.
