After five months of the implementation of IMO Sulphur Cap, our ‘Sea Sense’ column, in association with the North P&I Club, assesses whether the new measure has managed to enhance maritime safety

As the world expected that 2020 would be focused on the long awaited 2020 sulphur cap from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the spotlights have turned to the COVID-19 and the OPEC+ oil price war, BIMCO's Chief Shipping Analyst Peter Sand commented.

According to MPA Singapore, in the first quarter of 2020, most ships calling at the Port of Singapore have complied with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 sulphur regulations since they came into effect on 1 January 2020.

During the 2020 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Antonis Trakakis, Technical Manager, Arista Shipping, said in his presentation that developments in LNG bunkering infrastructure allow for global trade with medium sized tanks of moderate cost, adding that the technological advances will soon minimize the methane slip.

The German-based container company, Hapag-Lloyd recently announced that managed to cut its CO2 emissions per TEU/kilometre by 50% since 2008. According to the company, 95% of its vessels are in line with the IMO regulations, as they are all burning low sulphur fuel oil since the beginning of 2020.

During the 2020 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. John N. Cotzias, Projects & Finance, Xclusive Shipbrokers, provided an overview of the developments up until the 2020 sulphur cap, as well as current developments, and estimations about the future, considering implications due to COVID-19 pandemic.

In efforts to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on supply chains, the UK Maritime Coast Guard Agency has already suspended all checks on vessels for compliance with the 2020 sulphur cap regulations.

Scrubbers have been operating in marine environment for almost 30 years, but the implementation of the IMO 2020 brought a modern era of emissions reduction.
