Swedish prosecutors will release the chief officer of the Scot Carrier, after being detained for his role in the deadly collision with the Danish barge Karin Høj.
This moves came as the wreck of the ship was reported to be in danger of sinking, whilethe Swedish Coast Guard also reported a small oil leak.
To remind, the Karin Høj and the Scot Carrier collided earlier this week in Sweden, causing the Danish vessel to capsize. As a result, one crew member’s body was recovered from the wreck while another crew member from the ship remains missing.
Swedish prosecutors have been interviewing the crew of the Scot Carrier, and the preliminary investigation continues with the collection of logs and other saved information about the incident.
As a result of the investigation, the prosecutors were suspicious of the chief officer of the Scot Carrier, but these suspicions have now weakened.
However, the public prosecutor’s office noted that the arrest of the second officer remains and that the suspicions against him have not weakened.
In the meantime, the buoyancy of the Danish vessel has deteriorated, and there are fears that the Karin Høj wreck is in danger of sinking.
In addition, a recent update said that the vessel has also leaked an estimated 30 to 300 liters of what is believed to be hydraulic oil. .
If the vessel sinks it would not greatly affect the planned recovery effort.
