Pirates attacked a passenger boat that was enroute Brass Island, during New year festivities in Bayelsa.
The attack took place as the ship was travelling from Yenagoa, to Twon-Brass. The passengers were robbed of their valuables.
The state chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Ogoniba Ipigansi, confirmed the attack, also adding that the passengers were not hurt.
As he explained, the pirates “dumped the driver and the passengers in the bush and carted away the 115 horsepower Yamaha engine and other things.”
After the incident, a rescue team was deployed to the scene of the incident.
Before this attack, reporting by Dryad Global indicated that a Chinese fishing vessel has come under attack whilst operating offshore Equatorial Guinea Mbini Area.
The attack is reported to have taken place within territorial waters, while it is understood that the vessel was approached by a speedboat, reportedly with black hull containing an unknown number of perpetrators.
The perpetrators are also believed to have been armed and one crew member is understood to have been killed in the attack.
Furthermore, the reporting indicates that 6 personnel have been kidnapped from the vessel, including the captain.
