According to the South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), the wreck of the 146-meter Sewol ferry is about to be recovered from the water on April 5.
The 6,825-ton ferry sank off Jindo Island on April 16, 2014, with over 300 people on board, 250 of which were high school students on a trip.
The lifting project is expected to cost around USD 72 million and last ten to fifteen days. Specifically, two jack-up barges are going to lift the hull of the ship, Korea Herald reports. Last year, MOF said the ship would not be cut but hoisted in one piece in order to keep any remains of the still missing people inside the wreck.
A Chinese consortium led by Shanghai Salvage has tanken on the salvage operations from June 2016. However, both weather and technical problems impeded progress on the project.
