The first two ships equipped with dry scrubbers for exhaust gas cleaning have now been successfully operating on the Baltic and North Seas since early 2015.
The dry scrubbers supplied by Envairtec were installed on board Reederei Rörd Braren’s two multipurpose vessels in January and February. The dry scrubber was certified by DNV GL in the beginning of May.
”The importance of full scale references is indisputable and easy to understand. Seeing is believing! The fact that the first dry scrubber was certified only 2 months after being commissioned is also very impressive. My firm believe is that the dry technology will offer an attractive alternative to existing wet scrubber solutions,” says Director Kjell Weppling from Nordkalk.
In dry scrubber, the sulphur oxides in the exhaust gases are absorbed by granules of hydrated lime in a reactor. The technology is emission-free, as the process does not generate washing waters that are discharged into the sea. Thanks to the relatively simple structure of the dry scrubber, its energy demand is significantly lower in comparison to other scrubbers. When operating in SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Area), the return on investment is within 1 to 2 years.
Nordkalk offers a turnkey absorbent supply service for vessels equipped with dry scrubbers. The service concept includes production and delivery of absorbent as well as recovery of the used absorbent. Short lead times and just on time deliveries are a must to fulfil customer needs. The used absorbent, containing mainly gypsum and calcium carbonate, is collected directly after the ship is reloaded with fresh absorbent. The used material can be recycled, with several identified reuse areas such as the cement industry, agro technology and different earth works.
Nordkalk together with Envairtec, participated in Nor-Shipping in Oslo on June 2 to 5 to present the dry scrubber concept and turnkey absorbent supply service and tell about the latest experiences from the two reference ships.
