According to the Sri Lanka Navy, a vessel was in distress due to rough weather conditions. General Manager of the Marine Environment Protection Authority Dr. P.B. Turney Pradeep Kumarsa informed that the vessel was washed up ashore.
Specifically, Navy Media Spokesperson Lt. Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara reported that the ship was washed ashore in Rumassala, Galle, and was in close proximity to the Bonavista Coral reefs.
The spokesman added that the situation of the vessel posed a threat to the Bonavista coral reef.
In addition, it was also revealed that the vessel was carrying 158 tonnes of oil, and a possible damage to the vessel’s hull could lead to a fatal oil spill.
The Sri Lanka Navy tweeted that the investigation is underway to determine whether the vessel caused any harm to the environment.
Concluding, no injuries were reported.
