As part of its infrastructure upgrade, South Florida Container Terminal (SFCT) in Miami, US, is expecting delivery of six new electric Rubber Tire Gantry cranes (E-RTGs) in early January, to enhance environmentally-friendly operations.
The new cranes, following an agreement in February 2019, will replace older, diesel-powered toploaders which worked in the container yard, to enable zero emission operations and less noise.
This will make South Florida the first terminal in the US to have 100% zero emission RTGs, as these will be the first ones to be installed by any Miami terminal.
These electric machines will usher in a safer, more efficient and more sustainable era at the port allowing us to densify our terminal to handle future cargo growth. The new equipment replaces diesel toploaders and reduces the amount of CO2 into the air,
…said SFCT Terminal Director Mark Baker.
Upon arrival, the new equipment will undergo a 30-day testing and certification process by the manufacturer and will be ready for operations in early February.
This forms part of a $38 million investment upgrade of the terminal by the Port of Miami, in order to keep pace with container growth and South Florida supply chain demands.
The arrival of new e-RTGs will optimize containerized cargo operations and promote efficiency at PortMiami’s South Florida Container Terminal. We plan, in collaboration with our partners, to continue investing in this ever- growing global gateway. It’s expansion represents economic prosperity for not just our community, but all of Florida,
…added Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
Miami is a major economic and financial center and the sixth most densely populated major city in the US – with a metropolitan area of 6.1 million people driving South Florida’s growth.
