South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) informed earlier this week that 2018 coal exports decreased to 73.47 million tonnes from its record high of 76.47 million tonnes in 2017, due to less exports to South Korea.
Namely, Africa’s largest coal export facility was aimed to export at least 77 million tonnes of coal in 2019, reaching its 2018 target. Commenting on the situation, Nosipho Siwisa-Damasane, RBCT chairwoman said that what happens in the markets are a reality, but it is something that RBCT cannot control.
What is more, RBCT experienced port closures of 36 days in 2018, when in 2017 it had port closures for 38 days, because of weather conditions.
Currently, Asia is leading the bulk of the coal exports, achieving a share of 81.6% of all exports in 2018, with Europe taking 10.1% of the exports.
