Singapore announced the launch of a Centre of Excellence for Autonomous & Remotely Operated Vessels (CEAOPS) during the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) forum, to be used for research and technology innovation.
The Centre of Excellence is a collaboration between the Singapore Maritime Institute and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS). It will enable Singapore to conduct safer and more efficient operations for autonomously and remotely operated vessels.
Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for Health & Transport, Singapore. Member of Parliament for Sengkang West SMC, was present during the establishment of the Centre, and commented that
This continued collaboration is critical as we work to build a future-ready maritime industry.
It is the first initiative funded under Singapore’s Maritime Transformation Programme and will be located within the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore.
Overall, the research centres enable the shipping industry to get a better insight in technological issues and follow the path of digitalization and efficiency. This follows the decision of MSC 100, which approved last year the framework and methodology for the regulatory scoping exercise on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS).
