The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore presented the development concept for ‘The WAVES’ or Waterfront for All, innoVation, Enterprise, and Sustainability. This is an integrated waterfront development that will be the focal point for maritime innovation, sustainability, and talent development efforts in Singapore.
During the unveiling ceremony, Senior Minister of State for Transport, Chee Hong Tat shared that ‘The WAVES’ would support Maritime Singapore to capture new opportunities by building connectivity, capabilities and careers.
Planned to be operational by late 2025, ‘The WAVES’ will house research institutes and start-ups, facilitate testbeds and trials of decarbonisation technologies, and host maritime training programmes to attract and develop talent.
Mr Chee added that ‘The WAVES’ would be a waterfront landmark for the public to enjoy and feel connected to the sea. In the longer term, he said ‘The WAVES’ would support the building of maritime careers for our workforce and attract talents to work in MarineTech and decarbonisation.
Prior to the unveiling of ‘The WAVES’, MPA’s Chief Executive, Quah Ley Hoon commissioned MPA’s new hybrid diesel-electric enhanced patrol craft, MPA Guardian, during a commemoration ceremony at Marina South Pier.
Ms. Quah said:
The new enhanced patrol craft will strengthen our fleet of patrol craft enforcement and emergency response capabilities as it has higher endurance and the necessary sea-keeping capabilities for operations in all weather conditions
The hybrid diesel-electric aluminium catamaran measures 34 metres and is equipped with a comprehensive suite of assets which allows specialised operations and caters to the rigorous demands at sea.
MPA Guardian will supplement the existing fleet of six next-generation patrol craft and has the capability to be deployed for command-and-control during operations such as search and rescue, salvage, ferry incidents, spill response and exercises. The enhanced patrol craft will be deployed for patrolling duties within the port and has the necessary sea-keeping capabilities for responding to marine incidents outside the port.
