Shortlisted nominees announced for the 2025 Crew Welfare Awards

SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for this year’s Crew Welfare Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead of the 2025 Crew Welfare Week, a virtual event that will take place 24-26 June.

These prestigious awards aim to recognize organizations within the maritime industry that foster Crew Wellbeing & Sustainable Shipping. The online voting process has started at https://crewwelfareweek.com/awards/ where participants can cast their votes online up to 16th of May 2025. The winners will be the ones attracted the most online votes and the results will be announced on day 1 of the event, on June 24th.

Nominations shortlisted for the 2025 Crew Welfare Awards include the following organizations per award category:

Crew Welfare Tanker Operator Award

To be awarded to a ship operator of oil or chemical tankers, or gas carriers that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence and in any aspect of crew welfare

  • Anglo-Eastern Ship Management has been nominated for its commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace. Among its many initiatives, the company launched the Anglo-Eastern Women of the Seas (AWOS) program, which supports 204 active women seafarers. It is also a founding member of the Diversity Study Group’s (DSG) new DEIB initiative.
  • Ardmore Shipping has been nominated for its impactful Bursary Cadet Program. This initiative directly addresses financial barriers that prevent talented individuals, often from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds, from pursuing careers at sea. It is designed to break down socio-economic obstacles to maritime education and professional development.
  • Columbia Group has been nominated for its Columbia Crew Welfare Program that ensures holistic support for crew members, covering mental health, wellness initiatives, and career progression. Through its Crew Training Academy, it provides continuous professional development using state-of-the-art simulators, e-learning modules, and real-world scenario training.
  • Dorian LPG has been nominated for its efforts to support the employment of women on board its vessels, promoting equal opportunities in recruitment and career development. The company has collaborated with the AllAboard Alliance to enhance the onboard experience for female seafarers. It is also a founding member of the Diversity Study Group’s (DSG) DEIB initiative.
  • Pertamina International Shipping has been nominated for its investment in mental health training and support for its crew members. In early 2025, the company signed an agreement with the ITF to deliver a series of training programs and emergency outreach services focused on seafarers’ mental well-being over the next three years.

Crew Welfare Dry Bulk Operator Award
To be awarded to a ship operator of bulk carriers, or general dry cargo vessels that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence in any aspect of crew welfare

  • Anglo American has been nominated for its strong commitment to crew welfare across its chartered fleet. Through a range of initiatives, the company ensures that seafarers are not only safe but also respected, supported, and valued. Examples include enhanced internet access on board, psychological first aid, family liaison support, and comprehensive post-incident follow-ups.
  • Bernhard Schulte Ship Management has been nominated for its investment in crew training. The company has recently partnered with Huayang Maritime Center and Haikou Xinhaina Port and Shipping Technology to establish BSM-HMC Maritime Services, a new joint venture aimed at providing training to ensure a steady supply of highly trained Chinese crew for its vessels.
  • Neptune Dry Management has been nominated for its investment in crew welfare. Among other initiatives, the company supports the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and its 10 Principles, which focus on the protection of human rights and the environment, the preservation of labor standards, and a commitment to combating corruption.
  • OLDENDORFF CARRIERS GmbH & Co. KG. has been nominated for placing crew at the heart of its operations and embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into every stage of career development. Their ‘Global Cadet Program: Embracing Diversity’ is a structured initiative designed to train, retain, and promote cadets to long-term officer roles based solely on merit.
  • Pacific Basin Shipping Limited has been nominated for its investment in crew welfare. Among other initiatives, the company offers an enhanced maternity package available in all offices. This not only benefits the family unit but also contributes to a more balanced and productive workforce in the long run.

Crew Welfare Crew Manager Award
To be awarded to a crew management company that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence and in any aspect of crew welfare

  • Columbia Group has been nominated for its efforts to enhance crew competence and support career growth through the CSM Academy—a state-of-the-art training facility that blends traditional learning with advanced simulators and e-learning platforms, all integrated via its industry-leading Performance Optimisation Control Room.
  • Döhle Seafront Crewing Manila has been nominated for its dedication to the welfare of crew members and their families, through its Crew & Family Hub. The initiative establishes physical hubs in key cities across the Philippines, and online platforms to reach remote areas, offering health and financial wellness programs to as many crew members and their families as possible.
  • Magsaysay has been nominated for focusing on Filipino seafarers’ mental wellness and its efforts to remove the stigma around mental health issues. The company offers a Mental Wellness Health training program through its Training Center, wherein crew members can learn from global experts about stress management and building mental resilience.
  • OSM Thome has been nominated for its comprehensive ‘OSM Thome Cares Program’—a holistic initiative aimed at fostering happy, healthy, and financially secure seafarers. Built on the pillars of people, policy, process, and practice, the program addresses eight essential areas of well-being, creating positive ripple effects that extend to families and communities.
  • V.Group has been nominated for its ‘Voyage Loyalty’ program, designed to recognize seafarers’ contributions while enhancing crew retention, compliance, and operational efficiency. The program features a distinctive tiered structure and rewards commitment and engagement, with members earning SeaStars by completing specific activities.
  • Wallem Group has been nominated for its ‘Women of Wallem’ (WoW) initiative, which aims to build meaningful connections between the families of its seafaring staff and the shore-based team. WoW encourages open and friendly interactions, with members organizing and participating in social, community, and welfare activities.

Crew Welfare Service Provider Award
To be awarded to a Service provider that delivered service which contributes towards improving crew welfare

  • ATPI Marine Travel has been nominated for leveraging technology to enhance crew change travel wellbeing. Through innovative tools such as the Traveller Wellbeing Dashboard and the ATPI On the Go app, among others, the company identifies travel-related risks to wellbeing and designs journeys that help reduce anxiety and stress for seafarers and shore-based personnel.
  • IMEQ Center has been nominated for its IMEQ Seafarers App, developed in collaboration with OCEANIC and the UK P&I Club PEME program, which represents a groundbreaking advancement in crew welfare and mental health support. The app offers seafarers 24/7 access to mental health resources, self-assessments, and emotional support tools.
  • Inmarsat Maritime has been nominated for its Inmarsat NexusWave which combines multiple network underlays in one fully managed, bonded connectivity solution. Unlike conventional hybrid solutions, NexusWave enables applications to leverage the aggregate speed and capacity of all available networks, rather than relying on one network at a time.
  • OCEANIC has been nominated for its outstanding commitment to crew wellbeing, recognizing the unique challenges they face while working onboard. By empowering dedicated chefs and nutrition experts, the company drives impactful wellbeing campaigns, launches inspiring culinary challenges, and embraces a holistic approach to health, all with crew welfare at its core.
  • PHILCAMSAT has been nominated for its ‘BRIDGE’ Program, which promotes open communication about mental health onboard vessels. The BRIDGE Program (Building Resiliency in Diverse Global Environments) offers competency courses in Human Behavior, Mental Health, Communication, and Leadership to help seafarers navigate challenging working conditions.
  • Port Medical Management has been nominated for providing expert care to sick and injured crew members across all U.S. ports. The company recently launched a dedicated mental health division and web-based app SeaCalm to support seafarers in identifying and returning to their baseline of social emotional well-being whether they are coping with everyday stress or recovering from catastrophic events.

Crew Welfare Non- Profit Organisation Award
To be awarded to a non-profit organization or association that planned, promoted and delivered any program fostering crew welfare with tangible results

  • ECSA European Shipowners and ETF have been nominated for launching the ‘European Maritime Skills Forum’, which brings together maritime stakeholders, policymakers, and maritime education providers to develop a sustainable skills strategy focused on green skills, digital transformation, leadership, mentoring, and resilience.
  • ISWAN (International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network) has been nominated for its ‘Safe at Sea…It Takes All of Us!’ campaign—an awareness and behaviour change initiative co-funded by The Seafarers’ Charity and the UK P&I Club. The campaign aims to highlight the personal safety challenges women face in shipping and promote allyship across the industry.
  • International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has been nominated for its efforts to address crew wellbeing and welfare priorities. This includes the development of a program called “ITF Wellbeing,” through which they collaborate with government authorities and maritime academies worldwide to introduce a stress management module into the maritime curriculum.
  • Maritime Professional Council of UK (MPC) has been nominated for its work in promoting Kind Leadership in the maritime industry. In 2022, MPC and The Nautical Institute conducted a survey on Kind Leadership, published a report on the findings, and organized workshops to explore its importance and value in maritime practices.
  • Seafarers’ Hospital Society (SHS) has been nominated for its support of the health and welfare needs of women seafarers. Recently, the organization launched a pilot project—funded by a £25,000 grant from the TK Foundation and The Seafarers’ Charity—to create and distribute 1,030 feminine hygiene kits to women seafarers.

Crew Welfare Diversity & Inclusion Award
To be awarded to an organization that planned/delivered a program or promoted in any way the Diversity & Inclusion agenda

  • Magsaysay has been nominated for its support of female cadets through mentorship, leadership development programs, and initiatives that promote inclusivity, safe spaces, and confidence among female students. The company has also championed a bullying- and harassment-free workplace through its policy, Wag Ganiyan, Sexual Harassment ‘Yan (WGSHY).
  • Neurodivers At Sea has been nominated for its advocacy for the inclusion and support of neurodivergent individuals in shipping. Through a comprehensive awareness campaign—including educational resources and training programs—it has effectively addressed the stigma surrounding neurodivergence and promoted a culture of understanding and acceptance.
  • OneCare Group has been nominated for its Maritime Diversity and Inclusion Course, offered through the OneLearn Global training platform. The course helps maritime professionals promote gender equity and develop inclusive leadership skills. It is complemented by the Female Cadet Program & Mentorship, which empowers women pursuing careers at sea.
  • Sailors’ Society has been nominated for the launch of a new helpline to provide female seafarers with access to a trusted, female-led support system whenever they need it. The service, funded by The Skuld Cliub, provides 24/7 emotional support, crisis assistance, and peer-to-peer connections for female seafarers and cadets worldwide.
  • Seaspan Corporation has been nominated for its diversity and inclusion initiatives, including Employee Resource Groups and the ‘Seaspan Queens’ WhatsApp group, which support women seafarers. The Leadership Navigator Program promotes leadership development and career advancement for women and underrepresented groups.
  • WISTA Norway has been nominated for its ’40 by 30 Pledge’ encouraging organizations to commit to promoting diversity in the maritime industry and increasing women in leadership to 40% by 2030. The first report highlights diversity challenges and proposes solutions that fall into four key areas: Measurement, Awareness, Culture and Programs and Policies.

Crew Welfare Personality & Leadership Awards

There are no nominees shortlisted for this Award. After consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees, the SAFETY4SEA Team will announce the winners during the awards presentation. These are special category awards for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards crew welfare excellence throughout his/her career.
