SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for the 2024 SAFETY4SEA Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead within the scope of fostering Safety Excellence & Sustainable Shipping.
These prestigious awards aim to recognize organizations within the maritime industry that demonstrated safety excellence and performance above average, contributing to a more sustainable and attractive industry. The online voting process has started at https://events.safety4sea.com/2024-safety4sea-virtual-awards/ where participants can cast their votes online up to 13th of September 2024. The winners will be the ones attracted the most online votes and the results will be announced on Wednesday, 30rd October 2024, at a special virtual ceremony.
Nominations shortlisted for the 2024 SAFETY4SEA Awards include the following organizations per award category:
SAFETY4SEA Dry Bulk Operator Award
Award nominated to any ship operator of bulk carriers, or general dry cargo vessels that demonstrated safety excellence and performance above average in any aspect of maritime activity
- Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has been nominated for addressing the shortage of skilled labor in the maritime sector with the Smart Academy initiative, targeting nautical, technical, and electrical undergraduates from participating maritime universities.
- Niovis Shipping Co S.A. has been nominated for demonstrating excellent PSC performance and safety score performance in the past 18 months. The company has extensive experience in managing dry bulk carriers, with average age of dry fleet of less than 4.5 years.
- OLDENDORFF CARRIERS has been nominated for investing in crew training. The company has recently signed a deal with digital maritime training company MTR to provide extensive online training packages to seafarers, working on around 90 bulk carriers in Oldendorff Carrier’s fleet.
- Star Bulk has been nominated for demonstrating operational excellence in dry bulk shipping. Star Bulk’s vessels transport major bulks which include iron ore, coal and grain, and minor bulks such as bauxite, fertilizers and steel products safely, efficiently and with care to the environment.
- V. Group has been nominated for demonstrating operational excellence in dry bulk shipping. Latest Group performance data reports that their Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) average is below 0.25, whilst their Total Recordable Case Frequency (TRCF) average is 0.8.
- Wallem Group has been nominated for engaging in a variety of education- and welfare-focused initiatives worldwide. By participating in the Adopt a Ship programme and sponsoring cadets, Wallem Group contributes to maritime education and training as well as the recognition of seafarers and other maritime professionals.
SAFETY4SEA Tanker Operator Award
Award nominated to any ship operator of oil or chemical tankers, or gas carriers that demonstrated safety excellence and performance above average in any aspect of maritime activity
- Columbia Group has been nominated for embracing digitalization in favor of operational efficiency with the help of a world-first digital Self-Assessment Tool, which will allow its clients to navigate the new vetting regime SIRE 2.0 and ensure maritime compliance.
- OSM Thome has been nominated for fostering a strong corporate culture by applying many initiatives that encourage employee participation, effective leadership, diversity and inclusion and subsequently resulting in high safety performance and operational excellence.
- Synergy Marine Group has been nominated for supporting the mental health of Synergy employees and their loved ones via the which is available 24/7 and offers a range of well-being-enhancing tools and resources to boost quality of work-life.
- Teekay Tankers Ltd. has been nominated for employing a cloud-based digital hazard reporting platform. The mobile-friendly platform is used by seafarers to report unsafe acts or unsafe conditions on board as they notice them. It identifies trends and reports hazards in a digital dashboard called Vessel Balanced Scorecard.
- TORM has been nominated for its ‘One TORM Safety Culture – Driving Resilience Program’ which defines clear standards and metrics to drive continual safety improvements. It is based on the ‘Five Safety I’s’ which is the company’s approach to maritime safety.
- Wilhelmsen has been nominated for continuously improving its processes and systems to create a safe and efficient environment onboard that supports its crew. The company has recently updated and reviewed its TMSA and strives to maintain excellence in SIRE inspections.
SAFETY4SEA Sustainability Award
Award nominated to any organization that contributed towards sustainable shipping
- AET has been nominated for having clear policies to ensure sustainability at all aspects. In particular, its Sustainability Strategy is built on five pillars: Environment, Social, Governance, Financial, and Stakeholder Engagement, supporting 11 UNSDGs.
- Diversity Study Group has been nominated for its benchmarking initiative that promotes collaboration with maritime charities and participating ship operators. It aims to identify key impact points and utilize their DEI expertise to recommend sustainable solutions that will facilitate improved workplace culture and seafarer welfare.
- ReCAAP ISC has been nominated for updating the maritime industry on the current security situation in Asia, highlighting piracy hotspots and alarming trends as well as a providing best practice guidance. The organization issues weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports, infographics and uses categories to classify the incidents.
- The American Club has been nominated for providing information and comprehensive guidance on SASH (sexual assault and sexual harassment) prevention for crew onboard, raising awareness within the industry through a series of animations and other resources.
- The International Group of P&I Clubs has been nominated for establishing the ‘Personal Injury Committee’ with the aim to address personal injury claims within the maritime industry. The Group works together and collaborates with other organizations within the shipping community to protect life, health, and safety at sea.
- World Shipping Council has been nominated for its commitment to the safety of life and cargo at sea. The organization publishes several reports highlighting best practices and has recently collaborated with NCB to develop a new Cargo Safety Program for the transport of dangerous goods.
SAFETY4SEA Training Award
Award nominated to any organization that provided a significant achievement or breakthrough or significant contribution in any aspect of maritime training
- International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has been nominated for offering the ‘’Key DP Personnel continuing professional development (CPD) learning programme’’, developed by The Nautical Institute and IMCA to provide valuable CPD and learning to DPOs who perform a safety critical role onboard offshore DP vessels.
- Iridium Communications has been nominated for launching the ‘GMDSS Academy’, which is a free educational program dedicated to preparing both the current and next generation of seafarers to understand and use Iridium GMDSS. It is designed for every maritime training organization, maritime academy and college around the world.
- Mintra and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) have been nominated for collaborating to spearhead competency-based digital training for 20,000 seafarers though the ‘Trainingportal’ platform. This creates a learning environment with more than 800 courses and a modern matrix that is 100% focused on competency.
- OneCare Group has been nominated for offering a health wellbeing and eLearning platform which includes training courses, continuously updated in the company’s online content library ‘eShop’. This type of digitalization provides automation, increase in data quality and collection and structure for seafarers.
- Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training, Inc. (PHILCAMSAT) has been nominated for offering Maritime Just Transition (MJT) training programs that aim to address current challenges by providing global maritime professional with a new set of skills and competencies.
- VIKAND has been nominated for its OneHealth training programme that provides mental health First Aid for seafarers with the aim to promote mental health awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health issues onboard vessels.
SAFETY4SEA Technology Award
Award nominated to any organization that provided a significant technological achievement or breakthrough or significant contribution in any aspect of maritime safety activity
- Cydome has been nominated for providing a combination of holistic cyber protection. It covers all IT, connected OT, and communications assets on board the vessel with both real-time threat detection and proactive prevention, using a maritime-specific database of vulnerabilities that is fully automated on board the vessel.
- MariApps Marine Solutions has been nominated for its ‘’cruisePAL’’ which represents a significant advancement in digital solutions for the cruise industry, offering a comprehensive suite of software tailored to meet the evolving needs of operators and passengers alike.
- Marlink has been nominated for operating a unique Security Operations Centre (SOC), providing end-to-end security solutions across a range of cyber threats. Critical to the operations of the SOC is the huge knowledge base of maritime cyber threats held by a team of highly qualified and experienced people with an industry background.
- MSC GROUP HOLDING AND GSBN have been nominated for embracing digitalization through their collaboration that aims to enhance safety in transporting lithium battery shipments. The companies have integrated a safe transportation certification verification process that demonstrates that digitalization is a strategic necessity.
- NorthStandard has been nominated for its ECDIS Training Assessment (ETA) platform. Developed by NorthStandard’s Loss Prevention team in collaboration with the UK Hydrographic Office, it offers a substantive response to industry safety concerns over electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS).
- OneLink has been nominated for its ‘Ariva 360’ which is an innovative gamified VR application to help crew and officers familiarize themselves with specific safety and technical features onboard, creating a seafarer training programme delivered online, using AR/VR and real-world situations.
SAFETY4SEA Initiative Award
Award nominated to any organization or association that sparked, realized, or significantly contributed in any initiative fostering safer and sustainable shipping
- Britannia P&I Club has been nominated for creating a series of ‘loss prevention insight’ reports that offer an in-depth understanding of topical risk issues and are designed to enhance safety and sustainability within the maritime industry.
- I.M.E.Q. Center has been nominated for launching the Psychosocial Risk Assessment Inventory which involves a series of tools that assess primary stressors in the work environment and personal wellbeing. It is in accordance with the standards of ISO 45003:2021 and constitutes part of the Wellbeing Guidance Program.
- International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has been nominated for its ‘’Family Outreach Programme (FOP)” which falls under the umbrella of ISWAN’s Seafarers’ Education and Awareness Session (SEAS) project and highlights the importance of family support in enhancing seafarers’ well-being
- Safetytech Accelerator has been nominated for leading the ‘’Cargo Fire and Loss Innovation Initiative (CFLII)‘’.This is a groundbreaking collaborative programme that aims to address the persistent and perilous issues of cargo fires and losses on vessels, highlighting the need to embrace technical achievements and early-stage detection technologies.
- Windward Ltd. has been nominated for launching an initiative to help minimize the risk to supply chain stakeholders due to attacks in the Red Sea, the Bab-el-Mandab strait, the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. It provides stakeholders with valuable information and tools for decision-making, keeping seafarers and the supply chain safe from threats.
SAFETY4SEA Personality & Leadership Awards
There are no nominees shortlisted for this Award. After consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees, the SAFETY4SEA Team will announce the winners during the awards presentation. These are special category awards for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards crew welfare excellence throughout his/her career.
