SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce the distinguished shortlisted nominees for this year’s Crew Welfare Awards, following an online nomination process, initiated a few months ahead of the 2024 Crew Welfare Week, a virtual event that will take place 25-27 June.
These prestigious awards aim to recognize organizations within the maritime industry that foster Crew Wellbeing & Sustainable Shipping. The online voting process has started at https://crewwelfareweek.com/awards/ where participants can cast their votes online up to 10th of May 2024. The winners will be the ones attracted the most online votes and the results will be announced on day 1 of the event, on June 25th.
Nominations shortlisted for the 2024 Crew Welfare Awards include the following organizations per award category:
Crew Welfare Tanker Operator Award
To be awarded to a ship operator of oil or chemical tankers, or gas carriers that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence and in any aspect of crew welfare
- Anglo-Eastern Ship Management has been nominated for establishing a human performance strategy that spans the entire talent development cycle from recruitment and training to welfare and advancement and has contributed to a high retention rate of over 95%.
- Arcadia Shipmanagement has been nominated for promoting and supporting policies aimed at enhancing crew welfare, investing in training courses and initiatives for the development and competence of seafarers, alongside establishing a dedicated and globally acknowledged maritime training center.
- TORM has been nominated for engaging in well-being programs to support seafarers. The company takes part in innovative programs to monitor seafarers’ health. Recently, the company participated in the Safetytech Accelerator pilot, a collaboration between Hilo and audEERING, to uncover mental wellbeing insights for seafarers.
- V.Group has been nominated for engaging in innovative crew welfare initiatives. The company offers its crew an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which provides 24/7 access to free and confidential support and has established a global network of Crew Welfare Points of Contact (POCs) for seafarers, with a focus on supporting female and younger seafarers and their families.
- Wallem Group has been nominated for committing to innovation in its practices and training methods, with special emphasis on retaining knowledge and expertise. In addition to traditional classroom training, they have adapted resources from leading educational authorities, such as Harvard Business Review, to create engaging, bite-sized eLearning modules.
Crew Welfare Dry Bulk Operator Award
To be awarded to a ship operator of bulk carriers, or general dry cargo vessels that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence in any aspect of crew welfare
- Alpha Bulkers Shipmanagement Inc has been nominated for focusing on crew welfare, giving priority to training and skills development, supporting onboard connectivity, and investing in crew wellness and happiness as part of its commitment to sustainability.
- Anglo American Shipping Pte Ltd has been nominated for its steadfast support of seafarers. During the pandemic, the company played a pivotal role in the taskforce that developed the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change. Presently, as a signatory to the Sea Cargo Charter, the company is actively assisting seafarers toward a just transition.
- Berge Bulk has been nominated for focusing on crew wellness and crew welfare. Among many initiatives, the company has developed an in-house program for all seafarers to talk about mental health issues, incorporating trained psychological first aiders who are trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA).
- Fleet Management Limited has been nominated for establishing a dedicated team, the ‘FLEET Care’ team, to ensure the holistic wellbeing of its seafarers. The team comprises professionals from various backgrounds, including aviation and hospitality, in addition to two in-house clinical psychologists who provide free counseling services to seafarers.
- OSM Thome has been nominated for its commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for its employees, customers, and partners. The company attracts and retains qualified and talented candidates from diverse backgrounds, genders, and experiences, providing them with equal opportunities and access to shore-based maritime positions.
- Pacific Basin Shipping Limited has been nominated for recognizing the great value of having a diverse staff of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds. The company is investing in the development of a growing number of female seafarers on its ships, currently employing 52 female seafarers on its owned ships, including 16 officers.
Crew Welfare Crew Manager Award
To be awarded to a crew management company that demonstrated Initiative, Best Practices and Excellence and in any aspect of crew welfare
- Danica Crewing Specialists has been nominated for establishing a network of competent and motivated crew onboard, offering access to a vast pool of crew resources for all types of vessels. Additionally, they conduct market data analysis through surveys that address the current challenges facing the industry’s workforce.
- Elvictor Group has been nominated for its extensive track record in crew management. Among many initiatives, the Group has invested in cloud recruitment, teleworking, and e-sourcing and has integrated mental health awareness campaigns and programs within their operations.
- MAGSAYSAY has been nominated for its ‘We Care’ program, which supports Filipino seafarers and their families by promoting crew welfare initiatives, providing training and skills development, and offering support at every stage of their career journey, thereby enhancing their wellness and financial management.
- Senator Crewing (Manila), Inc has been nominated for its ‘Crew and Wellbeing Programme’’ that aims to attract Filipinos back to seafaring by prioritizing their wellbeing and satisfaction and providing a supportive channel for crews undergoing personal challenges.
- V.Ships has been nominated for engaging in many crew welfare initiatives, such as its ‘Employee Assistance Program (EAP)’ which provides 24/7 access to free and confidential support and its global network of ‘Crew Welfare Points of Contact (POCs)’ for seafarers.
Crew Welfare Service Provider Award
To be awarded to a Service provider that delivered service which contributes towards improving crew welfare
- AP Companies has been nominated for establishing a holistic professional approach to crew health that empowers clients to manage and forecast medical costs effectively, mitigate serious medical expenses whenever possible, and ensure continuous access to medical care for crew members regardless of their location.
- Baze Technology has been nominated for its crew welfare entertainment & information/content-sharing system “Bazeport Seea”, specially designed for commercial vessels. This service functions mainly offline giving crew access to a huge library of licensed movies, TV, news and information.
- IMEQ Center has been nominated for offering mental health expertise and insightful information to seafarers on mental health issues. The company also provides a free application for the seafarers which includes mental health content and medical content in collaboration with the UK P&I Cub.
- OneCare Solutions has been nominated for offering 24/7 direct access to medical expertise and mental health support to seafarers through its digital platform and support helpline which is manned by qualified physicians and clinical phycologists. The company has also started to offer mental health ship visits through its partnership with MHSS.
- RightShip has been nominated for its ‘Crew Welfare Self-Assessment’ which is a critical tool designed to help ship owners and managers improve crew welfare onboard their vessels and improve the lives of seafarers worldwide. It is built on the Delivering Seafarers’ Rights Code of Conduct, developed collaboratively with SSI, IHRB, and RightShip.
- VIKAND has been nominated for its ‘Mental Health First Aid for Seafarers’ course, developed and delivered by a licensed psychologist, which teaches seafarers to recognize various factors that can contribute to suicide and self-harm at sea, and how to approach and communicate with a colleague who may be at risk.
Crew Welfare Non- Profit Organisation Award
To be awarded to a non-profit organization or association that planned, promoted and delivered any program fostering crew welfare with tangible results
- InterManager has been nominated for its ‘General Principles of Conduct and Action’. These are principles to promote crew welfare focused on four key areas: Care and Respect for People, Continuous Development and Optimization, Effective Safety Culture, and Assessment and Verification.
- International Maritime Rescue Federation has been nominated for its ‘#SARyouOK?’ Initiative which aims to increase awareness and break down the stigma attached to mental health and well-being issues of SAR personnel globally. The initiative recognizes the unique psychological challenges faced by SAR personnel.
- Maritime Just Transition Task Force has been nominated for its new collaborative project that aims to develop a training framework to equip seafarers with skills as shipping transitions to zero greenhouse gas emissions. The Project will work to prepare seafarers for maritime decarbonization, ensuring a just transition for seafarers.
- Seafarers Hospital Society has been nominated for establishing ‘Best Practice KPIs’ (Key Performance Indicators) for ship owners and operators that measure the effectiveness of strategies aimed at improving seafarer health and wellbeing. These KPIs will assist participating organizations to track their own regulatory compliance and foster a culture of care.
- Swedish Maritime Administration has been nominated for participating in ‘REDO 2.0’ which is a joint research project for social sustainability at sea. Based on the three cornerstones of Safety, Inclusion and Motivation, REDO 2.0 is developing methods and tools to find new ways of learning and understanding – all to contribute to shipping becoming an attractive workplace.
- Waypoint Maritime CiC has been nominated for raising awareness about mental health issues specific to seafarers. Through the development of bitesize guides, the organization is providing valuable resources for both seafarers and shipping companies, promoting understanding of best practice and proactive approaches to mental health.
Crew Welfare Diversity & Inclusion Award
To be awarded to an organization that planned/delivered a program or promoted in any way the Diversity & Inclusion agenda
- Ardmore Shipping has been nominated for its ‘Bursary Cadet Program’ which fosters an environment where diversity is celebrated, and inclusion is prioritized. Through mentorship, guidance, and access to resources, participants are equipped with the skills and confidence needed to excel in a very traditional industry.
- Columbia Group has been nominated for its ‘Female Cadet Mentoring Programme’ which is a mentorship programme targeting female cadets specifically in a bid to promote and encourage a more diverse industry. This programme aims to attract more women onboard vessels as well as helping to sustain their presence within the industry further than cadetship.
- Diversity Study Group has been nominated for supporting greater equality, diversity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. Formed in 2018, it is the first organization dedicated to DEI in the workplace across the global shipping and maritime sectors, serving as Knowledge Partners to the Global Maritime Forum and as Founding Knowledge Partners to the All Aboard Alliance.
- Wallem Group has been nominated for its ‘Women of Wallem (WoW)’ initiative that provides a welcoming and supportive environment where families can engage with Wallem shore staff and other families of seafarers, fostering open and friendly interactions. WoW groups coordinate various social, community, and welfare activities in the Philippines.
- Women In Transport has been nominated for launching the ‘Transport Equity Index’ and related report, which reveal the realities women face and call for urgent action to break down systemic barriers and forge a path towards a truly inclusive and equitable industry.
Crew Welfare Personality & Leadership Awards
There are no nominees shortlisted for this Award. After consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees, the SAFETY4SEA Team will announce the winners during the awards presentation. These are special category awards for any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards crew welfare excellence throughout his/her career.
