IMB survey
In June 2012 the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) along with the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response to Piracy (MPHRP) and the Oceans beyond Piracy (OBP) released the first report on the Human Cost of Piracy (HCOP). The report showed the extent of physical and psychological abuse the seafarers under captivity had to endure until their release.
These organisations have recognised and identified that the HCOP does not stop at the physical and psychological abuse suffered by the seafarers. The true feelings of seafarers and their families and their combined fears, concerns, emotions have to be understood to clearly recognise the actual HCOP.
The purpose of this Seafarer Survey on the Human Element is to try to determine what exactly our seafarers and their families go through.
There are no right answers and no wrong answers and hence IMB requests you to please answer all the statements honestly so that the next HCOP report can clearly identify your (seafarers) concerns.
The statements have been divided into the main sea areas affected by piracy and armed robbery –
1. Somali piracy which includes Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Southern Red Sea and surrounding waters.
2. Gulf of Guinea ports and waters which includes incidents in and around the waters of Benin, Cameron, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leon, Togo and surrounding waters ad ports.
3. South East Asian ports and waters which include Indonesia, Philippines, Malacca Straits, Malaysia, Singapore Straits, Vietnam and surrounding waters and ports.
