Samsung Heavy Industries Co., one the major shipbuilders in South Korea, informed on July 29, that it has created a lithium-ion battery power system for ships. According to the company, the battery system can be implemented to any type of ships.
The system is developed with the cooperation of battery manufacturer Samsung SDI Co., and has also earned a type approval from DNV GL, Yonhap news agency reported. Thus, Samsung became the first local shipbuilder to build such a system.

The lithium-ion battery system can control power generators on vessels in an efficient way, will it is also able to reduce fuel costs, while it provides environment-friendly features.
In addition, Samsung Heavy is collaborating with Wartsila, aiming to develop energy storage system for ships.
