The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has interdicted night time operations involving the transfer of personnel or crew between vessels in Algoa Bay and its surroundings, following an incident which resulted in the loss of a life at the Port of Ngqura, according to GAC.
Namely, the ban was implemented after Henry Kemp, a deputy sheriff of the court, plunged at least 8 metres into the ocean, while climbing a steep ladder to execute a warrant of arrest to the master of the Liberian bulk carrier ‘Blue Marlin I’, on Saturday night, 27 January.
The man’s body was recovered by the ship’s crew in early morning, but despite efforts, he was declared dead.
The causes of the accident are yet to be revealed. SAMSA and the South African Police Service are currently investing the incident.
The ban is in effect immediately. Night time is considered to be from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise the following day.
