The Port of Rotterdam Authority predicts a great future for the biobased industry, which is why it intends to further strengthen Rotterdam’s leading position in this sector. To provide room for growth, the Port of Rotterdam designated an 80-ha plot with greenfield opportunities at Maasvlakte 2, specifically geared towards an innovative chemical industry that uses biomass as feedstock.

A unique feature of this area is its Plug & Play concept. In partnership with specialist suppliers E.ON, Vopak, Stedin and Evides, the Port of Rotterdam invests in the necessary local industrial infrastructure and utilities, so that biobased companies can focus on their core business. In addition newcomers aren’t required to reserve capex for matters like tank storage, energy networks, wastewater treatment plants and steam boilers. This can result in some 20 percent lower investment costs.
BioPort Rotterdam is an exceptionally strategic and attractive business location for biobased companies. The Netherlands has the most competitive sugar industry in the world. Over ten million tonnes of cereals, corn and lingo-cellulosics are traded, stored and transshipped in Rotterdam on an annual basis.
In addition, Rotterdam is Europe’s foremost port and a key hub for international cargo flows. In other words, biobased companies in Rotterdam are assured of a wide choice of all possible, flexible and reliable influx of raw materials, since huge quantities of biomass are already being transported via the Dutch port.
Biofuels
The production, trade and transhipment of biofuels come together in the port of Rotterdam. The port is ideally situated for the supply of raw materials and biofuels from around the world. The same applies to the distribution of biofuels throughout Europe. Five biofuel production facilities are located in the port of Rotterdam and there is room for growth.
With five manufacturers making biodiesel, bio-ethanol and renewable diesel, the port of Rotterdam is a major biofuel producer on the European market. These biofuels are used for purposes such as road transport, shipping and aviation.
Biochemistry
45 chemical companies, five oil refineries, four palm oil refineries, five bio fuel producers, two biochemical factories and various power stations together form a strong industrial cluster in the port of Rotterdam. Cooperation and synergy provide for a highly profitable business climate with opportunities for new chemical industry.
The port of Rotterdam has a very diverse chemical industry. Major petro chemical multinationals include Shell, AkzoNobel, DSM, LyondellBasell and ExxonMobil, but various biochemical companies are also established here.
Bioenergy
The port of Rotterdam is an attractive location for sustainable energy production such as solar energy, wind energy and energy production from biomass. The port offers logistical advantages for the supply of raw materials. Space has also been reserved for wind turbines and solar panels. The Municipality of Rotterdam, the central government, the province of South Holland and the Port of Rotterdam Authority also have a strong focus on sustainability and stimulate sustainable initiatives.
Possibilities for establishing new biobased industry on Maasvlakte 2 are available. Businesses which use biomass as raw material can build production locations there. The establishment of biobased activities in the port of Rotterdam is ideal for the supply of biomass and offers all the benefits of the existing energy and chemical cluster.
