Rijeka Gateway, a new terminal developed by APM Terminals and ENNA Group, is setting new standards in maritime digital connectivity with the adoption of a private 5G campus network.
This technology, in partnership with Hrvatski Telekom (HT), provides significantly higher data rates and lower latency compared to previous LTE networks. The terminal, which will open in 2025, is the first HT installation to use 5G Stand Alone (SA) architecture.
This advanced 5G infrastructure aims to support Rijeka Gateway’s predominantly remote operations, including electric container handling equipment, which aims to minimize environmental impact and noise pollution. The terminal’s commitment to high-tech solutions includes remote-controlled cranes and sophisticated energy optimization systems.
Furthermore, the use of HT’s public mobile network is aimed at ensuring reliable communication crucial for these operations, demonstrating Rijeka Gateway’s trust in HT’s capabilities and aligning with HT’s strategy of providing critical business communications
The terminal in Rijeka will be the only terminal in this part of Europe with remotely operated cranes, almost all equipment will be electric, and we are installing very advanced energy optimization and overall terminal management systems. Quality and reliable communication infrastructure is a prerequisite for such operations
