After being closed last week, due to rain and melting snow which raised the levels of the water, Rhine river has reopened today, 29 January, as local authorities say that the levels of water have dropped.
High levels of water were reported mostly in the northern Germany during the weekend, not allowing ships to sail under bridges. The water levels have now decreased, thus enabling sailing through the area. However, some restrictions on vessels remain in north Germany.
The Rhine is one of the most important shipping route regarding commodities, such as minerals, coal and oil products, grains and animal feed. Except for Germany, Rhine has proven to be an important route for Switzerland’s imports as well, Reuters reports.
