MEPC 64th session – incinerators with a capacity 1,500 kW i 4,000 kW can be type- approved
At its 64th session, the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) agreed that incinerators with a capacity greater than 1,500 kW and up to 4,000 kW can be type-approved under the existing Standard specification for shipboard incinerators (Resolution MEPC.76(40), as amended by Resolution MEPC.93(45))*.
The increase of the upper limit was justified by a request from Denmark (document MEPC 62/20) indicating that for large ships, the total installed engine power demands a higher fuel consumption which results in more sludge generated from the engines and the oil processing units.
According to the incinerator manufacturers, for large fuel consumptions, it can be a problem to burn the sludge generated within 24 hours in an incinerator with a capacity of 1,500 kW or below within 24 hours.

* Resolution MEPC.76(40), Standard Specification for Shipboard Incinerators, was adopted at MEPC 40 in September 1997 and amended by resolution MEPC.93(45) adopted at MEPC 45 in October 2000. The scope of the standard is to cover the design, manufacture, performance, operation and testing of incinerators intended to incinerate garbage and other shipboard wastes generated during the ship’s normal service. The resolution applies to incinerator plants with capacities of up to 1,500 kW per unit.
