Priya Blue Marine has issued a digest publication including local steel rates, tonnages arrived at Alang, and detailed information on the materials they obtain from ships during the recycling process, as well as the destinations of these materials from their ship recycling yards.
The company supports Green Ship Recycling in India. In 2015, they became the first yard in India to be certified by Class NK under the Hong Kong Convention and they are the only ship recycling company in the world that is a member of the SSI (Sustainable Shipping Initiative) Organization.
According to their publication, after ship recycling, each material removed from a ship is being used for a different purpose, as follows:
MILD STEEL
The mild steel that is removed from ships undergoes a process of being sold to traders and rolling mills. These entities engage in the melting and subsequent upcycling of the mild steel into various useful forms, such as agricultural equipment, TMT bars, motor parts, flanges, utensils, and a wide array of other products.
NON – FERROUS ITEMS (i.e. PUMPS, PIPES, VALVES, FLANGES, ANGLES, AND PROPELLERS, ETC.
Non-ferrous items are commonly traded and subsequently sent to recycling mills for the purpose of melting. This process allows for the utilization of these non-ferrous materials as raw materials in the manufacturing of various items.
MACHINERIES (i.e. MAIN ENGINES, GENERATORS, PANELS, MOTORS, DRILLING EQUIPMENT, AND CEMENTING UNITS, ETC.)
Machineries are sold in the local markets of Alang, which is known as the Secondary Market. This market stands out as the sole global marketplace that directly procures supplies from ship recycling yards. Additionally, these items are also exported for the purpose of refurbishment and subsequent reuse.
FURNITURE’S & LIGHT FIXTURES (i.e. TABLES, CHAIRS, BEDS, PARTITION WALLS, BULBS, TUBELIGHTS, ETC.)
The Alang Secondary Markets serve as a hub for the trade of furniture and light fixtures to various traders.
ELECTRONICS & NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENTS
Electronics and navigational equipment are subject to a process of reuse and subsequent sale to traders, who in turn engage in their own reuse practices.
OILY PRODUCTS (i.e. DIESEL, LUBRICATING OIL, HYDRAULIC OIL, HFO, GREASE, MGO, ETC.)
Various oily products undergo a recycling process facilitated by authorized recyclers. These recyclers engage in the refinement of these oily products, rendering them suitable for reuse. Subsequently, the refined products are made available for sale in the market
STORES & SPARES
The spare items are sold directly by their company
WASTES
The waste is dispatched to duly authorized recycling facilities & TSDF sites, undergoing additional recycling and disposal processes.
Priya Blue Marine says that steel produced through ship recycling uses only one-third of the energy required to produce conventional steel through iron ore mining.
Production of steel via ship recycling with less carbon emissions will be categorized as Green Steel.
At Alang, 97% of ships are recycled by refurbishing, reusing, or reselling the equipment and steel. The recycled steel will be regarded as a viable “raw material” by steel makers with net-zero emission goals, ship steel has fine grains giving it a good corrosion resistance character. The scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production route saves about 75 % of the CO2 produced compared to the conventional blast furnace route (BF/BOF).
