Verizon announced a European private 5G market with a deployment of private 5G network, at the Port of Southampton, after a deal with the Associated British Ports (ABP).
With the deployment of a private 5G network, the Port of Southampton will be able to benefit from the increased speeds and low latency, as well as IoT, real-time analytics, and even autonomous guided vehicles.
Private 5G technology builds the foundation for future deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning applications for more effective operations, while addressing data communications problems caused by poor Wi-Fi connectivity.
Commenting on the agreement, Tami Erwin, Verizon Business CEO, said that 5G will prepare the Port of Southampton to take full advantage of new technology applications and real-time analytics which will digitally transform its services in the future.
The platform will provide ABP with a secure private wireless data network across selected areas within the port’s east and west docks, enabling data communications to be consolidated onto a single network.
The aim is to reduce previous complexity and help improve the reliability and security of terminal communications.
