A new PortXchange highlights that Just-In-Time (JIT) Port Arrivals is an environmental and economical solution that must not be ignored.
The Untapped Potential of Just-In-Time Port Arrivals white paper is based on findings of field trials conducted by PortXchange. According to PortXchange, the findings prove that JIT Port Arrivals could reduce global container shipping emissions by at least 5%, translating to approximately 17 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
Reducing the amount of time ships spend waiting outside port and at anchor could significantly reduce ship emissions, according to studies carried out by GIA members. Ships can spend hours or days waiting at anchor outside ports, but providing ships with regular updates about the availability of berths, especially in the last twelve hours prior to port arrival, can support significant reductions in ship and port emissions.
The paper also identifies ports where JIT Port Arrivals could stand to have the biggest gains. These include: Buenos Aires, Moin, Valencia, and Tanger Med.
Key recommendations
The report white paper offers the following key recommendations that facilitate the adoption of JiT:
#1 Expand and incentivise stakeholder collaboration
Broader adoption across a network of connected ports, will exponentially increase the efficacy of JIT arrival implementations.
#2 Strategic deployment
Stakeholders should look at strategic ports where JIT port arrivals can be most effective, targeting those with higher traffic and longer waiting times as initial implementation points.
#3 Governmental and regulatory support
Regulatory bodies need to recognize and support technologies that facilitate JIT port arrivals as part of their broader environmental sustainability goals. This could be either financial or through easier adoption.
#4 Further research
Continued and joined up research into optimizing JIT port arrivals through machine learning and AI can further streamline operations, amplifying environmental and cost savings.
#5 Transparency and governance
Establish a framework for data sharing and governance to ensure all stakeholders are equally vested in the JIT arrival process.
Our white paper is a call for collective action, extending an invitation to governments and regulatory bodies to recognize and leverage JIT technologies to fast-track global environmental goals.
