The Portuguese Ports of Lisbon and Setúbal/Sesimbra have installed a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) solution, manufactured by Wärtsilä. The systems aim to enhance the efficiency of these ports by reducing waiting time for vessels and allowing just-in-time pilotage.
The project includes two VTS control centres, seven remote sites with sensors, and the integration of various radars, Automatic Identification System (AIS) Base Stations, day/night cameras, Radio Direction Finders (RDF), VHF and Navtex subsystems, and weather and sea sensors. In addition, data is being shared between the control centres and pilots via Pilot Portable Units – Pilot PRO application.

The VTS software has extensive functionalities, and the solution is modular, scalable, and accessible for future upgrade developments.
Commenting on solution, Rui Barata, Head of Pilot Department and VTS – APL S.A. and Carlos Marques, Port & Maritime Safety/Security Director – APSS S.A, said that the VTS is a very important solution for the ports, which are considered major on the Iberian peninsula.
Namely, this technology will enable them to improve their operations and the safety of navigation.
