Explosions were reported on 6 May at the Port of Sudan as attacks on the city continued for a fourth day in the latest confrontation between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have launched a drone strike on facilities in Port Sudan, targeting the container terminal, according to maritime security firm Ambrey. Al Jazeera reported that these were the most intense strikes since the assault on Port Sudan began on 4 May.
The destruction of fuel facilities, along with damage to the airport and port infrastructure, threatens to further worsen Sudan’s already dire humanitarian crisis.
Moreover, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stressed that the attack on the Port was a “worrying development threatening the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations” in the city, which has become a lifeline for humanitarian aid across the country.
The Secretary-General “renews his call for urgent dialogue between the warring parties towards an immediate cessation of hostilities and an inclusive political process,” Haq said. “This is essential to prevent further escalation, protect civilians, and put Sudan back on a path towards peace and stability.”
