Port of Tallinn has announced plans to develop Muuga Harbour and Paldiski South Harbour into leading energy hubs, focusing on sustainable and efficient energy solutions.
According to the Port, a significant step in this initiative is a partnership with Jetgas OÜ to establish a liquefied methane terminal at Muuga Harbour. The terminal, to be constructed in stages, will include up to five storage tanks and a pipeline connection to the quay, with the first phase expected to launch by the end of 2027.
This project is the result of a tender process aimed at identifying new operators for Muuga Harbour’s vacant areas. The terminal will accommodate various forms of liquefied methane, including LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), BioLNG (Liquefied Biogas), and e-LNG or SynLNG (Synthetic Liquefied Methane), supporting the transition to more environmentally friendly fuels in the transport sector.
JetGas OÜ, a prominent player in LNG imports and natural gas sales in the Baltics, emphasized the importance of reducing the carbon footprint of energy products. The new terminal will facilitate the sourcing of bioLNG and other methane-based fuels in larger consignments, enhancing supply security and pricing competitiveness.
To remind, Estonia and Finland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure and accelerate the creation of a climate neutral customer journey and maritime green corridor between Helsinki – Tallinn and Vuosaari – Muuga connections.
