The Port of Rotterdam Authority, the government and four provinces have agreed for more secure parking spaces and charging points for clean energy along two of the most important freight transport corridors heading for Germany.
The organisations aim to make sure that traffic and freight flows can run flexibly. The goal is to enable a smooth, reliable, robust, secure and sustainable transport system.
These corridors are big contributors to economic growth as well as good quality of life along important hinterland connections heading for Germany:
- East corridor (road transport via A15, inland transport across the Waal, rail transport via the Betuwe Route);
- Southeast corridor (Rotterdam-Moerdijk-Tilburg-Venlo).

Currently, there is shortage of secure parking along these corridors, especially for trucks. The government and provinces want to change this by creating between 700 and 900 extra parking spaces. In addition, Maasvlakte Plaza truck parking in the Port of Rotterdam also provides a model for the further roll-out heading east. The parking services’ investors and operators will be responsible for the realisation and operation of the truck parking.
To build these green corridors, there is also the need for reduction in diesel as fuel for freight transport. For this reason, a network of filling points for sustainable fuels and other energy carriers will be created to reduce emissions and noise nuisance.
