Port of Rotterdam presents its new train connection for fresh products, taking a major step towards sustainability. CoolRail will begin operations from May 6; It’s about a train connection for fresh products. The CoolRail transmits products, three times a week, from Valencia to Rotterdam.
Specifically, the new train direct transport is a more sustainable way, as a CO2 reduction of 70% -90% is achieved.
CoolRail is an initiative of Euro Pool System, provider of logistics services and reusable packaging for the fresh food chain.
In addition, transport by train mitigates the number of truck transports by 12,096 annually and saves 22 million road kilometres. Consequently, approximately 15,000 tonnes of CO2 are emitted annually.
From May 6, 42 containers are planned to travel there and back by train, 3 times a week, 48 weeks a year.
As Gerjo Scheringa, CEO of Euro Pool Group commented
After extensive preparations and the first pilot test, we are now taking the big step to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of the transport of fresh products.
According to the port of Rotterdam, Spain is a major trading partner for northwestern Europe for the import of fresh fruit and vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and oranges.
Concluding, the partners of this project are Euro Pool System collaborating with Shuttlewise, Bakker Barendrecht / Albert Heijn, Visbeen, Kloosterboer, DailyFresh, EasyFresh, Primaflor, Bollo, Agroiris, Fruveg, TobSine, Pozo Sur and Samskip.
