The Port of Rotterdam Authority welcomed the decision by IMO to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. It said that “IMO takes the Paris climate agreement seriously and actually tackles CO2 emissions from shipping.”
However, the Port Authority wanted IMO to had set higher targets at a level that is needed to achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement. This is why the Port Authority sees this decision as a very important first step.
In addition, the Port Authority will contribute to climate-friendly shipping. It has already started doing so by offering smart digital solutions that increase the logistical efficiency of shipping, developing infrastructure for climate-friendly fuels and promoting sustainable and clean power-to-ship opportunities in the port.

As a matter of fact, The Port of Rotterdam is about to experience its first ship-to-ship LNG refueling in June, which will be an important milestone in the use of the cleaner fuel in the shipping industry.
The € 5 million incentive scheme announced by the Port Authority in April to promote the use of climate-friendly fuels is also part of this plan.
