In August 2024, the Port of Los Angeles handled 960,597 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), marking a 16% increase compared to the previous year and the busiest non-pandemic month on record.
Eight months into 2024, the port is performing 17% better than in 2023, moving nearly a million more containers, with a total of 6,631,688 TEUs processed so far. Executive Director Gene Seroka attributed this surge to strong consumer spending and replenishment of inventories, which is expected to continue driving elevated shipping volumes.
The American consumer continues to spend and that’s helping to power our economy. Some of the cargo arriving now is replenishing inventories even beyond the year-end holiday season. Combined with a steady flow of manufacturing parts and components, we should continue to see elevated volume in the near term.
… said the Executive Director
August 2024 saw a significant rise in imports (509,363 TEUs, up 18%) and empty containers (329,491 TEUs, up 22%), though exports fell slightly by 3%. Seroka praised the port workers for their efforts in managing this record-breaking volume efficiently and safely.
