In a positive close to 2023, the Port of Bilbao reported a robust performance in its Annual Report, showcasing a 0.11% growth in traffic volume, reaching 32.8 million tons.
Looking ahead to 2024, the Port of Bilbao is set for substantial expansions, with key projects unveiled by President Ricardo Barkala. These include the second phase of the central breakwater and an initiative for the electrification of docks, aiming to connect ships to the electrical grid and reduce CO2 emissions, noise, and vibrations.
At the forefront of the port’s transformative agenda is the BilbOPS project, scheduled for full operation in 2026 with a significant investment of 78 million euros.
The first phase, focused on pier A-5, has been awarded at 4.7 million euros, supported by a substantial 4.3 million euro subsidy from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
The BilbOPS initiative aligns with the European Commission’s sustainability goals, with 14.2 million euros of the project’s investment subsidized within the CEF Transport 2021-2027 program.
The project aims to generate 20% renewable energy, with plans to elevate this figure to an impressive 50% by 2028, showcasing the port’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
