Antwerp Euroterminal (AET) is pioneering the implementation of shore power for seagoing vessels in Belgium, marking a significant step towards greening ports.
This shore power system allows docked ships to connect to the local electricity grid, reducing emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, and particulate matter, while also mitigating environmental noise. AET’s decision to install shore power, set to be operational by 2026, goes beyond current EU regulations.
Shore power is a very efficient measure to reduce emissions and is essential for our sustainable ambitions as a world port. This first shore power installation for deep-sea vessels will be installed on the Antwerp Euroterminal and will be operational as of 2026.

The project, spearheaded by the HOPaS consortium comprising Techelec, Yuso, and Whitewood, will see the installation of two shore connections with a total capacity of 5MW, primarily catering to Grimaldi’s new ro-ro vessels.
This initiative represents a substantial investment of €25 to €30 million, supported by a €4 million subsidy from the Flemish agency for innovation (VLAIO). The shore power system will utilize 100% green electricity, initially sourced from on-site wind turbines operated by Wind aan de Stroom.
As informed, additional renewable energy will be generated through solar panels and planned wind turbines, with surplus energy stored in a large battery system for optimal utilization.
Andrea D’Ambra, Grimaldi Group pointed out that in addition to the 16 ships in operation and the 12 under construction, all equipped with battery packs, they have already nine ships fitted for shore connection. Furthermore, 38 ships (including new buildings) will be equipped with AMP (Alternative Marine Power) and ready to connect by 2026.
We are therefore excited about this new project starting at AET, our largest terminal, which will allow our ships to use green energy during port stays and enable our Group to continue progressing towards the decarbonization of its activities.
